A summary of the ‘Safety Week’ on Warbud construction sites

During the 'Safety Week' which lasted from May 5 to 6, Warbud carried out a number of actions aimed at increasing employee and subcontractor's awareness in the field of occupational health and safety. The basic idea of the campaign for safety is best reflected by its leading slogan: "Everything starts from me. Safe I, Safe We". Approximately 3300 Warbud's employees and subcontractors participated in the "Safety Week" organized on 26 Warbud construction sites and in regional offices. There were 36 types of various activities, workshops and training sessions.

The participants valued best the first aid training conducted by qualified medical rescuers and actors playing accident victims. This allowed us to create realistic accident sceneries.

The training was divided into 2 stages. In the first stage the participants acquired theoretical first aid knowledge. The next stage were practical activities which caused the biggest emotions.
On chosen construction sites, including those in Lublin, Poznan and Wroclaw‚ mirrors were installed with the inscription: "Person responsible for health and safety on this site". The mirror is installed in a place which is passed by every day by site workers. Each staff member looking in the mirror will see his own reflection just under the letters and will understand that safety starts with and depends just on him. During the "Safety Week" almost 40 meetings of managers with Warbud and subcontractors' employees were held. These were called "15 minutes for safety". The purpose of those brief meetings was to pass information among others on the so-called near misses, actions to be taken in emergency situations and how to eliminate them, on working at heights as well as on using hazardous substances.

Another very popular type of activities were the demonstrations organized by suppliers and manufacturers of safety equipment. Our Employees had a chance to refresh their knowledge on the correct choice, use, maintenance and storage of various types of protection equipment. Presentations of personal protection equipment, such as modern footwear, safety goggles as well as equipment used for work at heights such as cables with energy absorbers, fall arresters and clips were addressed to all our workers and subcontractors.

One of the elements of the Week was the implementation of the National Hearing Protection Programme on Warbud sites in Warsaw and Lublin. Free hearing tests were organized for our employees and subcontractors who also received clear information why it is important to protect it. Representatives of the company Siemens Audiologische Technik (SAT) also organised a presentation to demonstrate how a person not taking care of his ears will hear after 10, 20 and 30 years of work in a noisy environment. In addition to that customized ear protectors were tailor-made for several dozen of Warbud and subcontractors' employees.

Our sites were visited by important guests - inspectors from the State Labour Inspection and State Sanitary Inspection who held lectures on safety at work. Ms. Dagmara Kupka from the Regional Labour Inspectorate in Łódź held a lecture on the responsibility of managers for site health and safety. She also presented case studies of accidents at work and made a slide show.

We also invited fire fighters form the State Fire Service who demonstrated how to use portable fire-fighting equipment in the case of fire (this time - a controlled fire). The purpose of the exercise was to refresh the knowledge and practice the skills connected with correct behaviour in the case of fire.

On our construction site of the International Congress Centre in Katowice there was a lecture held by Ms. Danuta Gawęcka, Director of the Polish Commercial Chamber of Scaffolding Systems.

Chosen construction sites were also visited by guests from France and the Czech Republic. Warsaw construction sites of Pacific office building and Ursynow Central Park housing estate were visited by representatives of VINCI Construction, Sogea Satom, SMP CZ, a. s., Prumstav a. s., among others by Mr. Jean Philippe Breot, VINCI Construction Prevention Director.
