MUSEUM OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR IN GDANSK

The architecture of the building clearly reflects its character and functions. The area of the museum has been divided into three thematic zones which symbolise the connection of the past, present and the future. The past is hidden on the six floors of the basement of the building whose deepest floor is situated 14 metres under the ground level. The present is inscribed in the area of the open yard around the Museum. The future is reflected by the spiry structure with a view terrace on top. The unique form of the building is created by a seven-storey concrete tower in the form of a leaning prism with a trapeze-shaped base at the ground level of the building and a height of approximately 40 m at its top.

The construction of the tower was one of the most difficult engineering challenges during contract execution. Another challenge was to protect the construction site whose 80% of surface area was situated underground.
