A summary of the 'Safety Week' on Warbud construction sites

In the week from May 18 to 24, 2015 the second edition of the Safety Week was organized on all Warbud's construction sites in Poland. This is the biggest event in the Polish market connected with safety at work. In this year the leading motto of the initiative was "Safety - a common goal." The activities related with the action were widely attended by the employees and subcontractors of all the companies of the Agreement for Safety. The Safety Week was full of presentations, meetings and workshops. On all construction sites of the signatories of the Agreement, which now associates 10 companies, a special poster was displayed advertising the event.

In Warbud the "Safety Week" was inaugurated on the site of the Central Park Ursynów housing project by Mr Jerzy Werle, Vice-Chairman of the Board.

Our employees and subcontractors had a chance to refresh their knowledge on the correct choice, use, maintenance and storage of various types of protection equipment during presentations organized by suppliers and manufacturers of safety equipment. There were presentations of personal protection equipment, such as modern footwear, safety goggles as well as equipment used for work at heights such as  cables with energy absorbers, fall arresters and clips. There were presentations of ways of using battery-operated power tools connected with lectures on technical aspects of various systems of anchors and fixing. During presentations each interested participant had a chance to test the tools. There were also presentations on the correct way of using formwork systems and other presentation of technical solutions increasing the level of safety at work.

On chosen sites, among others of the Europejski Hotel in Warsaw and Aquapark in Koszalin, there were mirrors installed with the inscription "Person responsible for health and safety on this site". The mirror is installed in a place which is passed by every day by site workers. Each staff member looking in the mirror will see his own reflection just under the letters and will understand that safety starts with and depends just on him.

During the "Safety Week" there were a number of meetings between managers and Warbud and subcontractors' employees. These were called "15 minutes for safety". The purpose of those brief meetings was to pass information on the procedures connected with working at heights, actions to be taken in emergency situations and first-aid activities in case of falling from a height or occurring in danger zones on a construction site.

There were also meeting of the OHS Department with site personnel. Their objective was to increase their involvement in the OHS issues and to discuss any risks and near-miss situations and the ways of reacting to them as well as present the scheduled actions.

A simulation of an rescue operation - falling from a height - our employees and subcontractor had a chance to observe the practical use of the first-aid equipment (R-1 bags and backboards). The builders were really keen on taking part in the presentations and they asked a number of questions to the rescuers presenting the correct ways of using the rescue equipment.

The Aquapark construction site was the venue for meetings with students from Koszalin Technical University and with children from an elementary school. The students had a chance to compare their academic knowledge with site practice. The children took part in an art competition named "A safe construction site" and in a number of experiments out of which the most popular one was the presentation of what will happen to an egg inside a child shoe and a protection shoe on which a plank falls.

We also invited to our sites fire fighters form the State Fire Service. During their visits there were presentations of organized evacuation and the workers had a chance to refresh their knowledge and practical skills connected with proper behaviour in the case of fire. Our sites were visited by important guests - inspectors from the State Labour Inspection who held lectures on the rights and obligations of employees and employers in the field of occupational health and safety.
