The construction of a military complex for the subunits of the 11th Lesser Poland Territorial Defence Brigade is the largest investment in the history of the Limanowa district. It has been long awaited by territorial defence units temporarily stationed in alternative facilities. This is also the first project in Poland to be built in the public-public partnership model, in which the Polish Development Fund (PFR) is responsible for funding and the city of Limanowa is responsible for its implementation based on market principles through its special purpose vehicle the company LimWOT Sp. z o.o.

Mr. Sławomir Wójciak, contract manager at Warbud SA reports that ‘three facilities with complete infrastructure will be built within the complex. The main building consists of four floors, including one underground level and three above ground. It will offer office functions and collective housing for approximately 440 soldiers. Its usable area is over 8,600 m² and the volume is almost 34,300 m³,’ explains Mr. Wójciak. ‘The second facility is a single-storey garage and workshop building, which will house 36 cars and trucks. There will also be repair and social facilities here. Its footprint area is nearly 1,850 m² and its volume is just over 9,900 m³. The next building is the gate house designed as a single-storey space for employees responsible for access security, operation and protection of the WOT complex,’ adds Mr. Wójciak.

The Limanowa battalion covers four poviats - Limanowa, Myślenice, Nowy Targ and the Tatra area. It will consist of four companies with the so-called mountain specialization. It means that, in addition to strictly preparing for defence, TD forces are trained to cooperate with GOPR and TOPR mountain rescue services.

We started construction work on a 3-hectare plot located near the Beskidy Wyspowe Mountains in June 2023. We ask the site manager, Mr. Krzysztof Kabaja, to describe work progress. ‘Now we are carrying out core and shell works, build external utility networks, road systems and rebuild existing utility connections,’ he reports. We have completed a 150-metre long palisade with a retaining wall, the main earthworks and the majority of brickwork and reinforced concrete works. The mountain skyline is wonderful, of course, but the construction site located in a mountainous area, with a steep driveway, significantly complicates the logistics of the work and deliveries. We must be very well prepared for changes in weather conditions,’ adds Mr. Kabaja.
