SARP Annual Award for International Congress Centre in Katowice

On 13 May 2016 in the Zamoyski Palace in Warsaw the Association of Polish Architects SARP honoured the International Congress Centre in Katowice by unanimously granting to the project its ANNUAL AWARD in the category named 'best architectural project implemented in the territory of the Republic of Poland in the year 2015'. The project beat 20 other candidates to the main award selected from among 81 proposals. The awarded project was designed by the studio JEMS Architekci from Warsaw and the general contractor was Warbud S.A.

According to SARP the International Congress Centre is a facility whose idea, well-thought of and surprising architectural form as well as its functional solutions, perfectly match from the functional and spatial point of view the icon of Silesian architecture - the Sports and Entertainment Hall called the 'Saucer'.  What is more important, the new neighbour does not hood interfere with its for and significant architectural dominance. The significant, black and shiny form of the building with flexible and functional architectural solutions applied in the internal spaces has been spectacularly cut through with a walkway canyon. The corridor, melting with the artificial green hill with a view terrace, minimises the scale of the building and creates a popular meeting place. In addition to that it functionally and aesthetically supplements the green public areas in the neighbouring notable cultural facilities - the seat of the Polish Radio National Symphony Orchestra and the Silesian Museum, which have also won many awards.

The competition was organised under the auspices of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Culture and National Heritage professor Piotr Gliński and under the auspices of the Minister of Infrastructure and Construction, Mr Piotr Adamczyk.

The Jury consisted of architect Mariusz Ścisło (Chairman, President of SARP), architect Alberto Veiga (Vice-Chairman, Barcelona/Spain), architect Andrzej Bulanda (Warsaw Branch), architect Stanisław Deńko (Kraków Branch), architect Andrzej Gałkowski (Katowice Branch), architect Andrzej Kwieciński (Coast Branch), architect Marek Orłowski (Szczecin Branch). The Jury awarded two Main Prizes (the second Prize for the best architectural project implemented in the territory of the Republic of Poland from public funds was awarded to the Katyń Museum in Warsaw). There were seven prizes in other separate categories and 8 distinctions (among others for the Multifunctional Sports, Recreation and Shopping Centre 'Tarasy Zamkowe' in Lublin, designed by Stelmach i Partnerzy Biuro Architektoniczne Sp. z o.o. from Lublin and built by Warbud S.A.).
