Warbud on the podium of First Aid Championships

For the first time in the history of the Agreement on Construction Safety, during this year's Safety Week, a professional First Aid Championship was organised. This pioneering and exciting event took place on May 14-15 and the arena of the participants’ struggle was a picturesque leisure complex in Sierpc. Twelve three-person teams representing the signatories of the Agreement stood up for the fight for the champion title: Budimex, Erbud, Hochtief Polska, Karmar, Mostostal Warszawa, Polimex-Mostostal, Mota-Engil Central Europe, Porr, Skanska, Strabag, Unibep and Warbud.

‘We adhere to the principle that practice makes perfect,’ said Mr Jerzy Werle, President of the Management Board of Warbud SA, opening the championships. Last year Warbud invited its own employees to a similar training ground. ‘This year we have decided to share the good practice and organize a competition throughout the Agreement because despite the involvement, trainings and the improving safety systems, accidents in the Agreements are still happening. I am glad that all members of the PBB have reacted so willingly to the idea of the competition.’

The teams fought for the champion title in extremely realistic simulations and conditions as close as possible to real site conditions. There was adrenaline, time pressure, professionally prepared helpers and everything took place in the rain and low temperature.

Team Warbud, composed of Magdalena Ozimek, Tomasz Gala and Jakub Wnęt took 2nd position beating 10 other teams and losing only with Strabag's team.

Participants competed in 12 challenging competitions. They presented their skills in providing assistance to an injured person suffering from in anaphylactic, septic, cardiac and neurogenic shock. They saved burned and drowning people and an unconscious infant.

They provided assistance to a person injured in a car accident and a man with an epilepsy attack.  They faced the need for resuscitation and automated external defibrillation. The team members' skills and talent were assessed by judges who work as paramedics on a daily basis. The basis for the assessment of knowledge and skills were the Guidelines of the European Resuscitation Council of 2015.

The awards ceremony was attended by, among others, representatives of the National Labor Inspectorate, Members of Warbud SA Management Board and Mr Leszek Gołąbiecki, Chairman of the Management Board of Unibep SA, currently acting as the Chairman of the Agreement for Safety in Construction. When congratulating the participants he said that ‘Everyone is the winner of this competition because everyone taking part would be able to save the life of a friend or colleague on the construction site and or in the office. And he would do it very professionally.’ He added that the event has an enormous potential and should be continued in the following years. Its purpose is not pure competition but improvement of first aid skills in the spirit of integration among the Signatories of the Agreement.

It should also be added here that the initiator of the Championships was Mr. Leszek Żelaśkiewicz, Member of the Board and Director of the Technical Office of Warbud SA. The event was organised by Warbud SA and the substantive partner was the company AEDMAX.
